Google Makes Deal With Us Developers In Latest App Store Shift

The Google Workspace extension provides a simplified, organized, and secure way to integrate your solutions directly into the Google Workspace user experience, allowing you to provide billions of Google Workspace users with access to your application’s logic and data. So whether your goal is to help users avoid switching contexts from their inbox to your application, or to easily import data from your solution into Google Sheets, developing your own Google Workspace extension is important to keep your users productivity, then participation is very meaningful and focused.
While the idea of a Google Workspace extension itself is not new, building extensions for Google Workspace has come a long way since it was first introduced a few years ago. Originally designed to allow the solution to extend our partner applications: Google Docs, Sheets, Forms and Slides, it is now possible to create an extension for Google Workspace that spans the entire suite, including Gmail, Drive and Calendar.
The original design created for our collaborative app also required you to use HTML, CSS, and Google Apps Script to “hand-scroll” elements like the UI and events, which required more DIY (aka code), so through Plugins are even more inconsistent on the market. This has changed with the recent adoption of a map interface for Google Workspace plugins, allowing plugins to be simplified and standardized using only their knowledge of Google Apps Script.
Today, we’re excited to announce that building Google Workspace extensions is progressing once again, this time offering the option to use Apps Script to build extensions, and general refresh times for Google Workspace extensions. Announced through the Early Access program in the middle of last year, the release of Alternate Runtimes is a major breakthrough for Google Workspace who want to use their own development stack: hosting, tools, languages, packages, processes, etc.

While other runtimes support the same functionality as Apps Script build plugins, the flexibility and freedom to choose a development environment and the opportunity to decouple from Apps Script can lead to greater developer productivity and performance gains for future projects. This common feature for Google Workspace solutions has finally become a reality.
It’s technically a bit more effort to use a different runtime approach, where Apps Script hides most of the complexity from developers, but it’s essentially replacing JSON with Apps Script to render the content that drives Google Workspace Add. Also note that whether you’re a beginner or an experienced add-on builder, we recently released the GWAO Card Builder tool, which allows you to design the user interface of your Google Workspace add-on projects. It’s an essential tool for plugins that use Apps Script or other runtimes, allowing you to rapidly prototype and design map interfaces without the hassles and errors of manually writing JSON or Apps Script yourself.
This general availability implementation of alternative runtimes also debuts the Google Workspace Add-ons Cloud API, allowing you to completely bypass the use of Apps Script to manage updates to Google Workspace add-ons that use alternative runtimes. Unlike when using other runtimes during the beta program, where you would still need to create an Apps Script project to plug your project endpoints through a manifest, the Google Workspace Add-ons Cloud API allows you to create and manage the deployment of the add-ons your life cycle A series of command line prompts.
Google Now Cards Integrated With Third Party Developer Apps
With the Google Workspace Add-ons Cloud API, you can create deployments, install or delete deployments, get a list of deployments, manage permissions, and more. This can be used directly from a CLI like gcloud, which will help simplify the development and deployment of Google Workspace extensions built with other runtimes. While another runtime for the Google Workspace extension is generally available today, many Google Cloud partners are already using the technology through our early adopter program. Netherlands-based Zzapps, one of those Google Cloud partners, is already working on building plugins for customers that use the spare time to build solutions.
We caught up with Zzapps owner (and Google Developer Expert) Riël Notermans, whose team has been developing on Google Workspace for over a decade, to share his team’s key takeaways from another runtime. Not only did he give his insight, but he added some screenshots from one of their recent projects to show. In Riël’s own words: “Now that we can use a different runtime for our plugins, it has changed the way we approach a project from start to finish. Prototyping with GSAO has allowed us to quickly draft the functionality of the plugin and build on our Trust and clarity in what will be delivered. Another runtime leverages our existing application effortlessly. We just need to generate a JSON response to push a map to interact with the plugin. We can work in our own environment, keep your own tools and development process . Here’s an example, using the Node.js Express server project we used to set up an email signature, add some routing to the maps, but use our existing logic. Plugins are used to manage functionality.”
