Windows 10 is here! Well, it’s available for a lot of people, but most of us still can’t download it until Microsoft says it’s okay (unless you want to do it manually).

Force Windows Update Command Line

As you can see, Microsoft plans to release Windows 10 in waves. This means that even if your computer is ready, you won’t necessarily be able to download Windows 10 right away. However, the suckers wait.

Stop, Start, Restart Windows Service Command Line

Even though the Windows 10 installer still says it will “notify you when it’s ready,” you can force Windows 7 or Windows 8 to start downloading Windows 10 files (thanks to our Windows 10 Reddit for helping us out this case). We have put together instructions with screenshots to guide you.

First, go to “C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDownload” (you may need to replace C: with a different drive letter if you installed Windows elsewhere) and delete all the files there. This gives Windows Update a clean slate.

Open the command prompt by pressing the Windows key and typing cmd. Do not press enter. Right click and select Run as Administrator.

Type “wuauclt.exe /updatenow” (but don’t enter yet) – this is the command that will make Windows Update check for updates.

In the Windows Update window, click Check for Updates on the left. It should say “Checking for updates…”

While this is happening, go back to the command prompt and enter the command you typed earlier.

You should now see Windows Update showing that it is downloading Windows 10. Before you actually install it, back up everything and make sure you’re ready.

Over the past few years, I’ve run several instances of Windows Server Core that, as we all know, don’t have a GUI. To update these instances, you need to run Windows Update using the command line, but this method also works on regular Windows Server instances with a GUI!

It’s nice to have a GUI, but sometimes it’s not needed, and sometimes it causes problems if the backup connection goes down due to data being dropped. I’ve seen this on newer Windows OSes where the Windows Update GUI stops updating and you sit there thinking updates are running when in fact they’ve all completed.

The GUI also creates additional clutter. Wouldn’t it make sense if there was an easier alternative to perform this function?

What Happens To All The Windows 10 Devices That Are Incompatible With Windows 11 In 2025?

On instances of Windows Server that have a graphical user interface, it’s faster and more responsive to open a command prompt (administrative) and start Windows Updates from there.

It also works with Windows Server Update Services, so you can use this method to connect to Windows Update (Microsoft Update) or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

I find it much easier to use this method than the GUI when updating many servers. After completing the update and returning to the server configuration program, you can use option 13 to restart Windows.
