HST… Film Review: Battleship

Lauren: I have to admit something right now, as a child I got really competitive when it came to Battleship. Each time I would swear I came up with the best distribution for my ships to trick my opponent, and would gleefully laugh in my mind when I would get to put a white peg of fail in the waters surrounding my fleet (obviously playing it cool on the outside). With that said, nothing was going to give me more pleasure than being able to bombard this movie with red pegs, shouting at the top of my lungs… wait for it… “YOU SUNK MY BATTLESHIP!” Original, I know, but don’t mess with the classics. Lauren: Before Pandora became more than the name of a box thanks to a little film called Avatar, before Star Wars became a space opera deserving of more than just cultish, nerd admiration (I’ll include Episodes 1-3 for Zac), there was a man named John Carter who found himself fighting for the inhabitants of Mars. With so much of my (Lauren’s) personality constructed by Television, from PBS shows of my childhood to everything Joss Whedon that influenced my sense of humor and sarcasm, it’s no surprise that every year I get pretty excited for the pilots making their attempt to gain viewers. Not only that, but sometimes I go crazy fanatic for those shows I have come to love for seasons and seasons. Chuck is only a half season!? Community is getting shelved!? NNNOOO!!!! Review: X-Men Origins Wolverine

The X-Men franchise returns with an origin story of its main character Wolverine, and the end result is a fun, action filled summer movie that gets the season off on the right foot.
James Howlett was born in the early 1800’s, a consistently sick boy; his father is murdered by vengeful neighbor who is father to his good friend Victor. Howlett in a rage attacks Victor’s father, stabbing and killing him with claws that appear between his knuckles on his hands. With the man’s dying breath, Victor and James learn that they actually share a father and the two begin to go on the run after James’ ability is revealed to the disgust of his family. The two then spend the next 130 some odd years living side by side, fighting in every “great” war over that time before eventually finding themselves in Vietnam. After an act of mutiny and being sentenced to death, they are recruited an hour or two after there execution had been carried out, both brothers posses healing powers, by an officer by the name of Stryker who has assembled a special team of similarly advantaged humans to carry out top secret missions. While on a mission in Africa, James has seen enough and leaves the team to live in seclusion in the Canadian Rockies.
