With a few days passed in April, it’s time to look ahead to what’s coming out in the next 3 months in movies, music, tv, and games. Last but not least, here is HST’s list of favorite video games from the past year. And what a year it was, with huge titles coming out and an epic fall season to cap off the year. I don’t mean to brag, but when I was little I was decent at climbing trees. I mean, I would get at least 10 feet off the ground. Ok, so that’s not that grand, but I had sensitive hands, and bark is all scratchy… The point is that for people with childhoods like mine, living vicariously through characters like Monkey (play Enslaved: Odyssey to the West if you haven’t), Altair, and Nathan Drake in all their platforming glory is the way to go. Uncharted 2 opens with our favorite treasure hunter, Nathan Drake, bleeding from the gut while taking an unintentional nap in a train car threatening to fall off the edge of the cliff that it is desperately clinging to. After taking control, you work your way up and off the hanging car and through the wreckage above, slowly learning the controls along the way. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Before you will understand what Drake is doing out in the snow without a coat, you have to play through the events leading up to this point, all starting with Nate being hooked into a simple act of thievery, which quickly evolves into an end-of-the-world-if-the-bad-guy-wins type deal.
Though this is not far removed from other “cover, shoot, repeat” games with your random vehicle chases and wall climbing, it is definitely the most fun I have had doing exactly that in a long time.
The great thing about Uncharted is that no aspect of the game was sacrificed for the benefit of something else. The story worked great for a game of this genre, and it is well supported in every aspect. I never felt irritated when I was taken out of the control position and replaced with cut scenes because they were beautifully animated. [Read more...]
