Now Playing Review – Stone

With Robert De Niro and Edward Norton’s names resting comfortably atop the title of the film on the poster one would think that nothing could go wrong in Stone. Turns out choice acting doesn’t always make perfection.  Instead the film still manages to sink like a stone.

De Niro plays Jack Mabry, a parole officer who is soon to retire.  Before he can leave he has one last case to consider, that of a man named Stone who is in prison for his part in a horrible crime years ago.  In order to get out on parole early Stone must convince Mabry that he has come to the right side of the law while behind bars and will no longer be a danger when released back into the world.

The films main story line revolves around the manipulation and relationship of three key figures.  As the man who seems to hold the power in this battle, De Niro perches behind his desk, gavel in hand and at the ready to come crashing down to prevent Stone from getting out on early parole. Comic-Con International 2010 – My Experience in Nerd Heaven

A couple of weeks ago I excitedly told my aunt that I was going to Comic Con in a week, with a big ol’ smile on my face.  I didn’t really expect her to be jealous, but I was overly excited.  Then she asked if it was a gathering of comics or something.  As in comedians.  I then proceeded to try and explain that it was this really cool event that happens each year that has been taken over by Hollywood in the past decade or so.  Basically it has everything a nerd would desire to see, including comics, writers, artists, video games, tv shows, and movies.  I told her about the panels I was planning on sitting in on and some of the people that were scheduled to attend.  I was adamant about making her see how awesome it was, but she just didn’t get it.  Color me deflated.  Oh well, I guess Comic Con is just for certain people…

Rental Review – A Perfect Getaway (Unrated Director's Cut)

My idea of a perfect getaway may not involve suspicion, violence and gore, but it sure makes for a suspenseful film.
A Perfect Getaway follows a couple, Cliff and Cydney Anderson, honeymooning on the Hawaiian Islands. While taking in the scenery of the great outdoors during an 11-mile nature trek across one of the islands, they come across a group of girls who have just learned that there have been some murders on the islands and that the killers have yet to be caught. Fearing that it might be the abrasive couple that they didn’t give a ride to and is now on the same hike that they are on, they decide to continue on with another couple, Nick and Gina. However, the idea of “safety in numbers” starts to seem fallible as paranoia sets in and everyone starts to become suspicious of everyone else, changing the hike into a game of “everyone’s a suspect.” [Read more...]
