HST… Film Review: Seven Psychopaths

Alan: Seven Psychopath’s brings up the question, “Who here is really sane?”  Yeah, sure we might think that we’re completely normal human beings…but deep down, I think it’s safe to say that we are all just a little bit unhinged.  We all have some thoughts that might seem crazy to some people, and to an extent that’s what Seven Psychopaths does best, let’s all of the crazy out. TV Without Commercials Review: Boardwalk Empire 2.Final

boardwalkempireComplete and utter shock, is the only way I can even come close to describing what I felt when I watched last nights season finally of Boardwalk Empire.  I had a feeling that this show would eventually have only one protagonist, and it was really hard to see them getting rid of Nucky Thompson’s character, but they had me fooled that he was going to prison for sure.  There seemed to be no way out of it, but Jimmy found a way.  A violently awesome way, but effective none the less.  Richard warned Jimmy that Nucky would never forgive him for the assassination attempt but Jimmy still tried.  I have to admit, even though he killed Angela, I still really like Manny Horowitz so I was kind of happy that when Nucky made his decision, it was Jimmy and not Manny.  I’m still not sure how I feel about Eli though.  He is such an idiot, but he is Nucky’s little brother after all so I guess he’ll stick around a little bit longer. TV Without Commercials Review: Boardwalk Empire 2.11

boardwalkempireAfter last weeks ending, I didn’t think there was anything the writers of boardwalk could have done to match that intensity, but boy was I wrong.  I love the way Agent Sebso has finally come back to haunt Nelson.  He seemed to get carried away in his righteousness at the end of season one, yet we have only seen him being forced to deal with Lucy and their child so far.  I always wondered how Agent Van Alden managed to get away with Murder right in front of an entire church congregation.  Well it turns out Nucky’s butler was part of that congregation and witnessed the whole thing, and happened to be dusting the room while Nucky’s lawyer was discussing Nelson’s testimony.  Jimmy seems to have gone completely off the deep end, and if anyone had their doubts about the relationship between him and his Mother, they were all erased after last night. TV Without Commercials Review: Boardwalk Empire 2.10

boardwalkempireWhen I first saw that the title of this episode was called Georgia Peaches, I was slightly confused.  What could Georgia peaches have to do with Atlantic City, gangsters and liquor?  Then it hit me.  During the scene where Nucky goes to New York to find a new lawyer,  he meets with Arnold Rothstein’s lawyer and is accompanied by Teddy.  When the lawyer sees Teddy he hands the young lad a baseball that is autographed by non other than Ty Cobb, the Georgia Peach.  The title is a reference to Cobb, but also to Nucky who, like Cobb, isn’t necessarily a good man but he is very good at what he does, in fact he is the best.  Not everyone agrees with his methods but his ability to get the job done cannot be argued with.   [Read more...]

TV Without Commercials Review: Boardwalk Empire 2.9

boardwalkempireThis weeks episode of Boardwalk Empire was entitled “Battle of the Century.”  This was of course referring to the fight between heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey and his french challenger Georges Carpentier which took place in New Jersey on July 2nd 1921.  This would be the only battle that took place during the episode and we didn’t even get to see it (but we did get to hear the real radio broadcast from 1921, that was pretty cool, but what else would you expect from Scorsese who used Jake LaMotta’s real fight audio in Raging Bull, but I digress).  That is my only complaint, because the rest of this episode was excellent but come on, show us Dempsey knocking him out.  I understand the title was about the fight since that was the actual name of that particular bought, but what we, the audience, witnessed was the build up to the inevitable battle between Nucky and Jimmy.  Last week Nucky declared that he was stepping down and therefore James was the new king of the boardwalk.  This week we saw what the power does for our young protagonist and how quickly that power seems to be slipping away. TV Without Commercials Review: Boardwalk Empire 2.8

boardwalkempireAfter watching last nights episode of Boardwalk Empire I was left with the feeling that the show would finally become a one protagonist series as opposed to the two protagonists, who have been fighting for supremacy over one another for as long as this show has been on the air.  Nucky’s reign has come to an end.  The legal pressure he is under as well as the threat on his life from last weeks episode seem to have gotten the better of him.  He has decided that he has had enough. He is stepping down from his position as treasurer and in turn relinquishing his thrown to Jimmy.  Nucky has decided that all he wants out of life is to help Margaret Schroeder raise her two children and the last place he wants to do that, is Atlantic City.  He still has something up his sleeve though, and he plans to use his connections in Ireland to accomplish whatever goal he has in mind.  Something involving the surplus guns he discovered perhaps, I guess we’ll have to wait and see. TV Without Commercials Review: Boardwalk Empire 2.7

Last nights episode of Boardwalk Empire was even more crazy than the week before, which is something I never thought would be possible.  Jimmy now has the power that he has been seeking and it appears that he is in position to lead his group of young gangsters.  They all have one thing in common, they have one person standing in their way from complete dominance of their respected cities.  It seems that all of them are in complete agreement that Nucky stands in the way of all of them.  While Jimmy is confident he will go to jail and therefore be out of their way, no one else shares his confidence.  Eli suggests that Nucky should be eliminated and everyone agrees.  Jimmy, hates the idea and is clearly torn up with his decision but is afraid to look weak in front of his colleagues so he carries it out but, thankfully, is unsuccessful. TV Without Commercials: Boardwalk Empire – 201

boardwalkempireLast night was the season premiere of the second season of Boardwalk Empire. With big names like Martin Scorsese and Mark Wahlberg attached to the executive producer roles the show immediately had high expectations.  The first season most certainly lived up to those expectations and series premiere last night was far from disappointment.   [Read more...]
