Review: Red

Red makes DC Comics two for three this year at making fun action pictures come alive from their pages and neither of them included a character anywhere near being their A, or even B, tent pole characters.
R.E.D.’s, Retired Extremely Dangerous, are ex-CIA operatives that are no longer operating in the field but are still dealt with extreme caution as they were the best of the best in their time. Frank Moses is definitely a R.E.D. and as he wrestles with retirement the only connection he has to anyone seems to be his pension agent, Sarah. Frank has developed a thing for her though and he is tearing up his checks and reporting them lost for the opportunity of talking to her over and over again. It’s when an attempt to take out Frank puts himself and his hopeful lady friend into danger that our story really kicks in.
Comic-Con International 2010 – My Experience in Nerd Heaven

A couple of weeks ago I excitedly told my aunt that I was going to Comic Con in a week, with a big ol’ smile on my face. I didn’t really expect her to be jealous, but I was overly excited. Then she asked if it was a gathering of comics or something. As in comedians. I then proceeded to try and explain that it was this really cool event that happens each year that has been taken over by Hollywood in the past decade or so. Basically it has everything a nerd would desire to see, including comics, writers, artists, video games, tv shows, and movies. I told her about the panels I was planning on sitting in on and some of the people that were scheduled to attend. I was adamant about making her see how awesome it was, but she just didn’t get it. Color me deflated. Oh well, I guess Comic Con is just for certain people…

The Decade's Best – The Lord of the Rings (2001-2004)

When it was announced that Peter Jackson, a small time and rather unknown Kiwi director, was going to be taking over the reigns of one of the most sought after and daunting film tasks in the history of cinema many didn’t expect a whole lot. But one came out of this man’s mind is an adaptation that Tolkien couldn’t have supervised much better himself and will go down as not only one of the greatest fantasy films, but flat out best films ever to grace our silver screens.
Now, let’s set the record straight right off, The Lord of the Rings is one film, broken up into three volumes for our butts and studio execs pockets pleasure. You will also note that my dates for the film is from 2001-2004, and that is because we didn’t have the full film experience in our hands until the release of the extended edition of Return of the King on DVD in 2004. (Though, don’t count out Jackson on making a couple changes and maybe even extending further on Blu-ray to coincide with The Hobbit)
The story takes place in the land of Middle Earth, populated by races of men, elves, orcs, goblins, dwarves, wizards, and most important to our quest hobbits. Hobbits are smaller people, not entirely different from men aside from their stature, state of leisure, and fascination with pipe weed. [Read more...]
Review: Star Trek

J.J. Abrams’ second feature film is a fast, fun, and ultimately successful reboot of the floundering and practically disappeared Star Trek franchise from modern media.
Aboard the USS Kelvin, the ship is responding to an anomaly coming from a supposed black hole only to come across a huge Romulan ship coming through said Black Hole to which a fierce, if one sided space battle begins to erupt in space. Suddenly, fire ceases from the Romulan ship just as it was about to be finish off the Kelvin. The captain of the Romulan ship Nero demands the Kelvin’s captain’s presence on his ship as to find out more about the location of a ship being manned by Spock. As the captain turns leaves, he turns the ship over to his 1st officer, George Kirk who after tragedy on the Romulan ship orders a full evacuation of the Kelvin and is able to save the lives of hundreds of the ships crew, including that of his just born son James Tiberius Kirk as he has to sacrifice his own for the sake of his crew. Meanwhile on Vulcan, Spock, who is a half human, half Vulcan son of the planets ambassador to Earth excels as a student of the country and carries the element to have emotions unlike others in the Vulcan race due to his human lineage.
