Review: Super 8

Super 8 is a fun and fine looking homage to Spielberg, as is intended.  But I can’t help but feel it could have been more given a bit better characterization and fully engaging some of its really interesting ideas surrounding the secret of the film.

There is no need to get into plot here because JJ Abrams doesn’t want us to.  I for one appreciate that sentiment as I hate that I can’t comfortably watch TV spots or trailers anymore without seeing a bit/to way to much spoilery footage in them.  The gist of the story is a group of kids, who are making a movie on their Super 8 camera, experience a train crash in which something covertly escapes and begins causing disturbances around town.  That is all I am giving you.

And that is all you need to know. The mystery, surprise, and suspense the story throws at you is what makes the film fun and JJ Abrams is more than up for taking us for the ride.  Like I said in the opening, the film has a lot of great ideas and I love a lot of them.  The execution of some of these ideas fall short while others soar and I will hit on those that worked for me first.  The train crash mentioned above is incredible and exhilarating and will go down as one of the set pieces of the summer.  [Read more...]

Ben and Locke of LOST Getting Their Own Hitman Drama?

So TV Guide is reporting that Terry O’ Quinn (Locke) is shopping around a new series post-Lost that will co-star Michael Emerson (Ben) that would revolve around the two as a pair of hitman that are dealing with family problems on the side. This sound brilliant and you can get the full scoop over at TV Guide.

But lets get the word out on this and hopefully J.J. Abrams helps bring this to fruition.

Suddenly, fire ceases from the Romulan ship just as it was about to be finish off the Kelvin. The captain of the Romulan ship Nero demands the Kelvin’s captain’s presence on his ship as to find out more about the location of a ship being manned by Spock. As the captain turns leaves, he turns the ship over to his 1st officer, George Kirk who after tragedy on the Romulan ship orders a full evacuation of the Kelvin and is able to save the lives of hundreds of the ships crew, including that of his just born son James Tiberius Kirk as he has to sacrifice his own for the sake of his crew. Meanwhile on Vulcan, Spock, who is a half human, half Vulcan son of the planets ambassador to Earth excels as a student of the country and carries the element to have emotions unlike others in the Vulcan race due to his human lineage. Presented with the opportunity to stay and go to school at the revered Vulcan academy [Read more...]

Review: Cloverfield
