Over the past few years Marvel has been wracking up a slew of great films based on their universe’s superheroes. Starting with Iron Man, Marvel moved though the Hulk (The Incredible Hulk, just so there’s no confusion), Captain America, and Thor, each with quite a bit of deserved success. In addition to Hawkeye and Black Widow, these characters make up the avengers, and sticking to the additive math, the greatness of each of these previous films adds up to one incredible, possibly the best, superhero movie. The Breakdown: Marvel’s The Avengers Trailer

Last night the ALCS game ran long on FOX due to extra innings, so neither Nate or myself got more than 8 minutes of Terra Nova’s episode recorded. Lucky us, if FOX is still doing their “make you suffer” game of posting shows 8 days after airing, we’re gonna have to wait a while to see the rest of the episode.

I have some confessions to make: Even with the persistent recommendation from a certain reviewer on this site I have never really had the inclination to see Ben Affleck’s first directed big screen film, Gone Baby Gone. (2) I seem to have a subconscious aversion to films involving bank robbery. No Inside Man or Public Enemies for me. (3) A certain upset in a World Series a few years back has led me to have negative feelings towards Boston. Clearly this film has a lot to make up for to win me over, yet The Town manages to quite easily. Silly preconceived notions…
The Town personalizes the criminal underbelly of Charlestown by following the character of Doug MacRay, a man who is neck deep in this way of life as a bank robber. He and his crew are quite the professionals, yet somehow he makes the amateur mistake of bringing his work home with him, as his friend so adequately puts it. What he is referring to is a certain hiccup to their life of crime glory when Doug somehow manages to fall in love with the woman they took as a hostage during their last robbery. Now Doug has a reason to try to leave his lifestyle, but unfortunately his ties in the community and the FBI’s interest in him are making it hard for him to make a clean break. [Read more...]

Ben Affleck’s second directorial effort is as strong as his first, Gone Baby Gone, and is a very good crime/bank robbery movie that is tough to complain about.
The film follows Doug MacRay, a bank robber, and his team as they run through a series of jobs which events lead to Doug wanting to finally get out. A former hockey protégé, Doug, turned to his father foot steps after he couldn’t make the squad; unfortunately his father was a crook and Doug begins working for his dad’s old boss, “Fergie the Florist.” It’s on a recent job though that Doug falls for a hostage that they take and riskily enters into a relationship with her. Added to this, the F.B.I. is coming after him as well and only needs some strong evidence to finally lock Doug and his gang up.
Comic-Con International 2010 – My Experience in Nerd Heaven

A couple of weeks ago I excitedly told my aunt that I was going to Comic Con in a week, with a big ol’ smile on my face. I didn’t really expect her to be jealous, but I was overly excited. Then she asked if it was a gathering of comics or something. As in comedians. I then proceeded to try and explain that it was this really cool event that happens each year that has been taken over by Hollywood in the past decade or so. Basically it has everything a nerd would desire to see, including comics, writers, artists, video games, tv shows, and movies. I told her about the panels I was planning on sitting in on and some of the people that were scheduled to attend. I was adamant about making her see how awesome it was, but she just didn’t get it. Color me deflated. Oh well, I guess Comic Con is just for certain people…

Rental Review – The Hurt Locker

The Hurt Locker may be a beautifully shot film, but it is far from the perfection I was expecting after all the hype it has been drenched in, especially post Oscars.
To sum it up, I think the best way to describe the movie is to compare it to the subject matter of the film, bombs (this seems like a really great and creative idea at 4 AM, so I’m just gonna go with it and see how it pans out).
Defuse Attempt: The Hurt Locker follows a team of three Army bomb squad members who are brought in to keep the ridiculous amount of bombs found in and around the streets of Iraq from exploding. These scenes may not be as crazy and up-tempo as the bomb defusing scenes of the MacGruber SNL skits, but honestly the best scenes in the entirety of the film are those spent simply waiting. The passage of time is marked with a countdown of days left until these men are home free, but its presence is more foreboding than it is hopeful. [Read more...]
