Review: The Dilemma

The Dilemma is a bit all over the place and doesn’t really know what it wants to be and unfortunately doesn’t embrace the dark side of the film that is kind of interesting.

The film follows a pair of friends/business partners that are have an unsuspecting wrench thrown in their relationship when one of them sees the other’s significant other with another man.  This proves difficult for the one who saw the adultery, Ronny, as he doesn’t know how to break the news to his buddy, Nick.  To compound the problem even further, Ronny, doesn’t know what to do with his own girlfriend as Nick and his cheating wife, Geneva, had been pressuring him to pop the question before all these adultery issues arose.  Ronny begins to sneak around after Geneva and when he finally confronts her a war of secrets begins to unfold.

Review: 9

Shane Acker’s feature length debut is a bit of a half baked idea paired with astonishing visuals that in the end overcomes most of its short comings with its imagination and originality.
9 awakens in a world destroyed by war and immediately is thrown into an adventure to not only save a new friend, but to discover the world and what happened to it. 9 himself is a sack like creature (think Little Big Planet without as big a head) and he quickly discovers that he is not the only one of his kind milling about. The human race is all but gone, as a war with machines has decimated both their world and the species, and all that we are aware of being left is a group of frightened and reclusive sack creatures numbered from 1-9. The remaining group quickly tries to convince 9 to hide with them and not try and do anything heroic after the loss of the fourth member of their group to a monstrous machine that prowls the city. But 9 won’t have it and is able to sway 5 to head after 2 and the adventure soon becomes even bigger than they thought possible as a new threat arises from their search. [Read more...]

Review: He's Just Not That Into You

This dramedy that is being sold as some silly romantic comedy is actually pretty serious and interesting look at relationships that works for the most part, outside vindicating the failures of some its characters in the end and warping young girl’s minds.
The film follows an ensemble of intertwining characters and couples, for instance Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Connelly, and Ginnifer Goodwin (yes three “jen”ifers) all work together and they gossip about their love life’s, Connelly and Aniston both are married or in a long term relationship, while Goodwin is the example of exactly how a girl should not act if she is trying to pursue a man, which connects us to a Kevin Connolly as they open the film on a date though he is already infatuated with Scarlett Johansson who has a chance encounter with Bradley Cooper who is Ben Affleck’s friend who is in a long time relationship with Jenifer Aniston to bring things full circle. Now the interconnections between these people come into play for an occasional twist here or there, but where the film works the best is in the examination of relationships and the courting process of males and females today.   [Read more...]

Review: The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)

Keanu Reeves stars in this remake of the lauded cautionary tale original, putting a relevant green spin on things; the effect is a solid sci-fi thriller that operates with reserve instead of going way over the top.
Helen Benson (Jenifer Connelly) is a scientist that deals with studying bacteria and elements on outer space bodies like the moons of Jupiter when she is quickly called by an anonymous voice and is swooped away by the government to advise on a potential collision with a fast moving object heading directly for earth. The object is traveling near the speed of light and is able to switch directions to pinpoint itself on a Manhattan target and the impending destruction does not pan out, as the object slows down and lands in the middle of Central Park without damage. What lands is a large swirling orb of light that an alien of some sort emerges from barely visible through a blinding light. When a shot goes off and injures the alien, Helen who had landed in the park after the object touched down, rushes to his side just as a large robot emerges from the light emitting a piercing noise that “paralyzes” everyone and causes all electronics to fail in the area. Review: Reservation Road

This Oscar hopeful unfortunately falls short. Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Ruffalo star in this serious drama about the effect of a hit and run can have on the two parties involved; the grieving family and the runner.
