Now Playing Review – Tangled

Most little girls who are not outside playing in the dirt with the boys are busy fantasizing about growing up to be a princess, so the next logical step in that train of thought when Disney classics mix in is which Disney princess they would like to be.  Some prefer a pumpkin carriage to a ball to dance the night away with a prince, while others may lean towards flying across the sky on a magic carpet.  With the release of Tangled, it looks like there are going to be more girls growing their hair long, waiting for the day for a prince to come along and ask her to let it down for him.

Other than the classic line: “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair” I’m sure I am not alone in saying that I really couldn’t elaborate on the story of this long haired girl locked away in a tower.  As a matter of fact, I actually had to google it just to see what it was all about, and turns out it’s a Grimm one from time to time (oh ho ho play on words…).  Working the good ol’ Disney magic, the story of Rapunzel is changed up to form a happier, exciting adventure story.  Plus, we have a new male lead.  Everyone knows the damsel being saved by a Prince is so 2D. For Your Renting Pleasure

That’s right, my write-up for rentals has changed yet again.  This time around (and hopefully I will stick to it this time) I will write up little blurbs about the movies I have seen in the past week on Fridays, giving you suggestions for what to pick up and what to avoid when considering what to rent that weekend.  On this weeks list we’ve got: The Back-up Plan, The Last SongOperation: Endgame, Repo Men, The Runaways, A Single Man, and The United States of Tara.

United States of Tara: Season One

This Diablo Cody created, Showtime TV show is about a woman who has recently gone off the medications that have helped to suppress the other faces of her multiple personality disorder (or dissociative identity disorder).  Toni Collette plays Tara, and the way in which she moves in and out of these other personalities is pure artistry.  Though this is a serious topic, it does not shy away from the humor of it all, thanks in large part to the people she becomes.  In the beginning she is aware of three: Alice is a 1950s housewife, Buck is the redneck hick with a heart of gold, and T is basically the teenage slut, but eventually another emerges (but I will not spoil in for those who want to watch) in response to the overriding story arc of Tara digging into her past to discover what caused this disorder to take form during her teen years.

The show does not just stop with how this disorder effects Tara, but shows the strain it puts on her family.  John Corbett plays her supportive husband who i leading the search to discover her past and must constantly coral the other personalities (though he is far from ashamed of his wife). Comic-Con International 2010 – My Experience in Nerd Heaven

A couple of weeks ago I excitedly told my aunt that I was going to Comic Con in a week, with a big ol’ smile on my face.  I didn’t really expect her to be jealous, but I was overly excited.  Then she asked if it was a gathering of comics or something.  As in comedians.  I then proceeded to try and explain that it was this really cool event that happens each year that has been taken over by Hollywood in the past decade or so.  Basically it has everything a nerd would desire to see, including comics, writers, artists, video games, tv shows, and movies.  I told her about the panels I was planning on sitting in on and some of the people that were scheduled to attend.  I was adamant about making her see how awesome it was, but she just didn’t get it.  Color me deflated.  Oh well, I guess Comic Con is just for certain people…
