So Cartoon Network has animated a brief prequel segment for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World which goes into Scott and Kim’s high school romance. The animation is pretty simple but captures Bryan Lee O’Malley’s panels almost frame for frame as you can find this segment in the beginning of Vol. 2.
This scene was probably one of my favorites in the books and one I sorely missed in the film. Now we have it here though and this kind of makes me wish they would do this to the whole series! Come on Universal!

Taglines on movie posters are iffy things. They are there to grab your attention if the image on the poster can’t pull that off on its own, with words that are supposed to get you excited as it toots the horn of the film that might not deserve to even have a horn capable of being tooted. Just look at the tagline for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which claims that the movie is “An epic of epic epicness.” Pretty big tooting going on right? Wait… Anyway… This is definitely one of those times that the tagline gives the right amount of hype that the film deserves. It is indeed of the epic proportion.
Scott Pilgrim takes its story from a series of graphic novels created by Bryan Lee O’Malley (go read them now!), and it goes a little something like this: Scott Pilgrim is dating a high schooler until one day a girl named Ramona Flowers comes along and becomes a strong infatuation for him. Eventually they start dating, but in order to keep dating her he has to do much more than your average Joe. You see, Ramona comes with the baggage of leaving a trail of victims in her wake, seven evil exes to be exact. Now Scott Pilgrim must defeat all of them to get his happily ever after with her. Review: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a kinetic, and often times perfect, adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s fantastic comic series and is a movie that is unlike almost anything you have ever seen.
Scott Pilgrim is a nice guy, but he can be kind of a dick, and rather oblivious, but ultimately he is dating a high schooler. Knives Chau, she’s Chinese. The two pow around Toronto, nearly holding hands, and maybe even hugging once; it is easy, safe, and comfortable for Mr. Pilgrim. That is until Ramona Flowers enters Scott’s dreams; literally. And before he even knows it Scott meets Ramona in real life and he can’t help himself but be drawn to her while he quickly begins half-assing his relationship with Knives. Scott enters a sticky love triangle with the two that is only further complicated by the appearance of the League of Ramona’s Evil Ex’s whom he must defeat in order to win her heart.
Comic-Con International 2010 – My Experience in Nerd Heaven

A couple of weeks ago I excitedly told my aunt that I was going to Comic Con in a week, with a big ol’ smile on my face. I didn’t really expect her to be jealous, but I was overly excited. Then she asked if it was a gathering of comics or something. As in comedians. I then proceeded to try and explain that it was this really cool event that happens each year that has been taken over by Hollywood in the past decade or so. Basically it has everything a nerd would desire to see, including comics, writers, artists, video games, tv shows, and movies. I told her about the panels I was planning on sitting in on and some of the people that were scheduled to attend. I was adamant about making her see how awesome it was, but she just didn’t get it. Color me deflated. Oh well, I guess Comic Con is just for certain people…

Review: Fantastic Mr. Fox

Wes Anderson returns to the screen with a film that fits into his little world only this time with a bunch of talking animals from the wonderful fable by Roald Dahl.
Mr. Fox was always a daring individual, and stole live stock for a living before he met Mrs. Fox and was planning on having a child with her. He decided to settle down and became a writer for 12 fox years, but the itch of adventure and change in a mid-life crisis of sorts over took him and he put himself in a situation where he can become a thief again on the sly. Though this doesn’t go well and before he knows it his friends and family are at risk of the evil Boggis, Bunce, and Bean, his human neighbors whose product he has begun to steal.
This film continues the fantastic trend of animated and family entertainment this year that is suitable for all ages and able to be enjoyed, maybe more than the kids, by the parents. Anderson’s dialogue and character traits are all here, but I feel like this is his most accessible film to date to the general public. There are cute characters and action for the kids and witty humor and grown up issues for the adults, if it wasn’t for Up this would be the most broadly appealing film of the year. Anderson also does a nice job at creating actual tension and thrills through the adventure of the film and isn’t afraid to do some silly bits for humor’s sake as well.

Review: Funny People

Judd Apatow’s latest is his lesser effort to date, but is still quite funny at times it just drags on a bit to long and doesn’t hit the emotional highs I think it was going for.
George Simmons is a comedy superstar. He lives the life of celebrity, alone, in a large mansion paid for by the countless blockbuster hits he has starred in. This all seems well and good until one day he finds out that he has a form of leukemia and that it is too late in the game to do anything conventionally associated with cancer treatment. So while George takes his experimental drugs he decides to get back to his roots of stand up and recruits a young and upcoming comedian, Ira, to be his assistant and joke writer as well as being the only person that knows of his condition.
The film kind of goes where you think it will from there, finding himself, becoming a better man, trying to reconnect with that one lost love, the usual. Apatow does bring a lot of fresh humor and laughs to the proceedings though, and makes the conventional worth experiencing again as this is far more a straight forward effort then his bit crazier previous features. James L. Brooks has been heavily cited as Apatow’s influence here and that is clearly seen throughout the film; albeit a bit raunchy, crude, and dirtier. [Read more...]
Now Playing Review – Funny People

As I walked out of the theater after seeing Funny People, I felt a little let down by this sloppy addition to Judd Apatow’s empire. Based on what my fellow audience members were mumbling, most of us seemed to agree. It was funny, but man was it way too long; both obviously and painfully so. It was as if after the production wrapped, the editor had a dilemma on their hands, and this is what I could discern from the movie. There are all these moments that should have been trimmed for time, but when the final edit came to be they couldn’t decide what should go, so they just stuck it all in. Because of this, it was almost like this whole film was a montage sequence, a collage of some of comedies finest moments.
Review: Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

The newest film out of the Apatow camp is by far the weakest, but still has some good laughs and an enjoyable turn by John C. Reilly as Dewey Cox.
As a spoof movie, it is a fun romp, and has to be a million times better than the likes of Epic Movie or that recent string of horrible looking crap. Though, the movie doesn’t work the whole time and drags for much longer than it should in the middle which ultimately leaves a stale taste in your mouth when it is all said and done. [Read more...]

I need to start off this review with a disclaimer, I love Wes Anderson’s films, love, love, love them, and I love this one too, but I will try to be unbiased and will write this review with average movie fan and not as a Wes Anderson fanatic.
So The Darjeeling Limited is a train, and the title of the film, obviously. And this train carries our 3 leads on a path to hopeful bonding and self/group discovery.
