MTV Awards: Teen’s Dreams, But Critic’s Nightmares

Moon ManWhen I was younger, MTV was my saving grace. It had some great programs, good music, and an overall cool vibe. But the best part for me, were the award shows. That was the time where musicians, comedians, and actors were able to step out of their serious roles and just have fun. I remember watching it in 1997 when Puff Daddy (now Diddy, for those who don’t know), along with Sting and Faith Evans did a tribute to one of the greatest rapper’s of all time, Notorious B.I.G.. Of course, at this time, I had no idea who Biggie Smalls was, but it was still a very touching tribute.

Now, I am older and bolder, and a hell of a lot smarter than I was back then. Now, I see both of MTV’s award shows as mere jokes. MTV uses this time to, not really celebrate the mediums it is representing that night, but is advertisements for its own productions. Every time I hear that “The cast of Jersey Shore” is going to present an award, all I can do is drop my head in shame. [Read more...]

The Double Feature: Inception and Shutter Island

The Double Feature will take a look at a new release title in theaters (well, most of the time) and pair it with a film you can create a double feature with after you get back to the comfort of your living room.

Sometimes it will be obvious, other times not so much but I hope this gets you thinking about some other good double features of your own creation. The double feature is a bit of a lost art if you ask me, and while I am no expert at them I love figuring out a couple good films to play together.

Up first, Inception and Shutter Island!

Review – Inception

Christopher Nolan’s Inception is a rare breed.  The film features great acting, stunning visual effects, a unique storyline, and fantastic direction.  Nolan seems to walk a line with Inception which should please everyone from the film geek to the grandparent.  Nolan repeats a cycle throughout the film of giving you hints, then giving you the answers.  The hints are comprised of short beautiful shots which are puzzling and often haunting.  And the answers will eventually follow to help grandpa catch back up to the plot.  Don’t get me wrong.  This is a smart, thought provoking film, but if you pay attention you will not be lost.

Nolan introduces us to a fascinating universe with a creative well-constructed technology complete with its own interesting laws and guidelines.  Much like our introduction a decade ago to the world of The Matrix, this introduction was smooth and captivating.  Inception actually bears several resemblances to the Wachowski brothers’ film.  The agents of The Matrix are very similar to the ‘defensive subconscious projections’ of Inception (and not just because both are terrible marksmen).

Will It Fall? The Final Shot of Inception (Spoilers)

So obviously Lauren and I (Check out our reviews first; Lauren’s and Zac’s) think Inception is a pretty swell movie.  Lauren has picked it as her best picture favorite and it seems to be a lock Top 5 for me as well.  But we both agree that the final shot of the film is easily the biggest flaw of the film and kind of B.S.

Either way, we discuss it in depth below and feel free to let us know if you agree.

And Obviously: Spoilers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now Playing Review – Inception

I remember reading something once when I was younger about the possibility of being able to control what happens in your dreams.  You were supposed to ask yourself throughout the day “Am I dreaming?”  Eventually this habit would cause your dreaming self to ask this same question, so that when you realized you were dreaming you would be able to influence the dream in your own way.  Basically your dream self could do all the things you would never do in the real world, creating a second reality in a way.  Back then I thought it was awesome because I would finally get the chance to kiss the boy I had a crush on… Talk about dreaming big, I know.  I eventually forgot about this until tonight when Inception showed me why leaving the dream world to the subconscious is probably a wiser choice.

The characters in Inception take this process one step further.  Instead of trying to manipulate the random dream they find themselves in once they fall asleep, the team led by Cobb actually create the dream from the ground up.  They then enter this “controlled” environment with their mark, or the person that they will then try to steal certain desired information and secrets from for their client. Review: Inception

Inception, the latest from Christopher Nolan, is nothing short of phenomenal and is a prime example of why we go to the movies; to have an experience almost none of us could ever even imagine.

I am not going to even try to explain the plot as it is both complex and better experienced as virgin as possible. But in short it follows a team of contracted thieves, led by Cobb, who steal information from people’s minds by sedating them and creating a dream world which allows them to extract their target mission. When the team is recruited to plant an idea in a mark’s mind, through Inception, they will have the greatest challenge they have faced yet.

Inception Teaser I Was Talking About

http://movies.apple.com/movies/wb/inception/inception-tlr2_720p.mov

Hit the link and put it on your calendar.

This trailer is just so crazy, and I have no idea what is going on, I can’t help but be enthralled with the amazing imagery unfolding on the screen.  The cast is great, the director as good, and I think we have our highest grossing original property of 010 already picked out.

I think I am going to go cold on this title from here on out though unless I happen to catch a preview in the theater, and even then I might shield my eyes.  This is going to be one of those movies where the less you know the better it will be.  Luckily Nolan will probably do a fine job of keeping this wrapped up tight regardless to make my life easier.

Suggestion Box (Dec. 21 – 27)

Inception Trailer – A longer trailer for this film was shown before Sherlock Holmes.  Though it is safe to say that I am still lost as to what this movie is actually about and the extent to which they mean “your mind is the scene of the crime,” I am no less excited for it.  Check it out here.

Knight and Day Trailer - Tom Cruise puts his crazy to use as a gun-toting agent of some sort with Cameron Diaz in tow.  Check it out here.

Inception Teaser Poster

This is one of the biggest films of 010 from Christopher Nolan and has an absolutely stunning cast.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ken Watanabe, Tom Hardy, Michael Caine and Dileep Rao, that is a cast few can top.
The trailer is weird and illusive and the poster is no more helpful. But still, you should get a better look at the trailer in the coming weeks as it will be attatched to either Avatar or Sherlock Holmes.  Check out the poster after the jump.

Suggestion Box (Sept. 7 – 13)

The Guild – Season 3 Episode 2 was posted this week. Not as good as the others in my opinion, but you should still check it out here.

The Legend of Neil – 4th episode of season 2 released this week. There is much bonding over drinking. Check it out here.

Borderlands Claptrap Movie – Okay, so this doesn’t really have too much to do with the gameplay or anything like that, but it’s pretty funny. And this short does show off the look they are going for in the game, as well as the humor it will have (hopefully). Check it out here.

Assassin’s Creed 2 Gamplay Walkthrough - This time we do get to see some of the new features in the second Assassin’s Creed. Check it out here.
