Now Playing Review – Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Whether you’re a fan of Transformers or Michael Bay, there is a strong likelihood that Transformers: A Tribute to Michael Bay will not disappoint you. However, if you are a fan of quality film making, then maybe it’s time to finally skip out on the Transformers series.
Okay, so most of you probably know that the title I gave in the intro isn’t really the name of the movie, but more on that later. Transformers: Dark of the Moon takes us back to the Apollo 11 moon landing, and as films sometimes do it tells a story that doesn’t quite stick to the history book version. Don’t worry, the Transformers don’t go kill Hitler or anything (yes I do realize Apollo 11 happened after WWII, but I am more than willing to go out of my way to reference Inglourious Basterds). Anyway, during the war on the alien planet Cybertron, home of the transformers, an escaping Autobot ship crashes into the Earth’s moon, spurring the space race on. Long story short decades pass, digging up the secrets buried surrounding the US trip to the moon. [Read more...]
Comic-Con International 2010 – My Experience in Nerd Heaven

A couple of weeks ago I excitedly told my aunt that I was going to Comic Con in a week, with a big ol’ smile on my face. I didn’t really expect her to be jealous, but I was overly excited. Then she asked if it was a gathering of comics or something. As in comedians. I then proceeded to try and explain that it was this really cool event that happens each year that has been taken over by Hollywood in the past decade or so. Basically it has everything a nerd would desire to see, including comics, writers, artists, video games, tv shows, and movies. I told her about the panels I was planning on sitting in on and some of the people that were scheduled to attend. I was adamant about making her see how awesome it was, but she just didn’t get it. Color me deflated. Oh well, I guess Comic Con is just for certain people…

Review: The Wolfman

The Wolfman took a long and rough road to the screen and the results are a rather poor to mixed affair that lacks direction, plot, and quality acting from a talented group of filmmakers.
The film follows the return home of one, Lawrence Talbot, who is summoned back to his family’s estate after learning of the disappearance of his brother from his fiancée Gwen. Upon Lawrence’s arrival, his estranged father, Sir John, informs Lawrence that they have just found his brother’s body in a ditch, badly mutilated, making him the most recent victim in a series of vicious murders in and around the town. The rumors begin to murmur among the folk and their reasons point to recently arrived gypsies’ dancing bear to long forgotten monsters of lore now returning to terrorize the town. Lawrence sends off Gwen and promises to find out what did this to her fiancé and his brother and his investigation leads him to the rumored gypsy camp that has caused all of these problems. The Decade's Best – The Lord of the Rings (2001-2004)

When it was announced that Peter Jackson, a small time and rather unknown Kiwi director, was going to be taking over the reigns of one of the most sought after and daunting film tasks in the history of cinema many didn’t expect a whole lot. But one came out of this man’s mind is an adaptation that Tolkien couldn’t have supervised much better himself and will go down as not only one of the greatest fantasy films, but flat out best films ever to grace our silver screens.
Now, let’s set the record straight right off, The Lord of the Rings is one film, broken up into three volumes for our butts and studio execs pockets pleasure. You will also note that my dates for the film is from 2001-2004, and that is because we didn’t have the full film experience in our hands until the release of the extended edition of Return of the King on DVD in 2004. (Though, don’t count out Jackson on making a couple changes and maybe even extending further on Blu-ray to coincide with The Hobbit)
The story takes place in the land of Middle Earth, populated by races of men, elves, orcs, goblins, dwarves, wizards, and most important to our quest hobbits. Hobbits are smaller people, not entirely different from men aside from their stature, state of leisure, and fascination with pipe weed. [Read more...]
