HST…Best TV of 2012

HSTTelevision

Day three of the Best Of lists is upon us, bringing about our thoughts on the best and worst of what TV brought us this past year.  Some shows returned stronger than ever, others stumbled slightly, all the while new shows fought the ratings to deserve respectable seasons.  Through it all, the one thing that remained clear was that sitting in front of your TV screen was an acceptable excuse for spending a night in. HST’s Best of 2011: Television

With so much of my (Lauren’s) personality constructed by Television, from PBS shows of my childhood to everything Joss Whedon that influenced my sense of humor and sarcasm, it’s no surprise that every year I get pretty excited for the pilots making their attempt to gain viewers.  Not only that, but sometimes I go crazy fanatic for those shows I have come to love for seasons and seasons.  Chuck is only a half season!?  Community is getting shelved!?  NNNOOO!!!!  Good thing there are some great new shows that helped these irritated wounds sting a little less. Community: My Favorite Episodes (So Far…)

communityIn all honesty, I am not a big television watcher, mainly because I can never follow a series to its completion (mostly dramas). For years, I’ve bounced around different networks trying to find a show that, not only I can get into, but I can also relate to. Luckily for me (and what turns out to be millions of other people), Dan Harmon created Community: a smart, witty, over-the-top sitcom following a study group who are just trying to get by. Music Review: Childish Gambino’s “Camp”

Camp AlbumIf you don’t know who Donald Glover is, let me give you a small history lesson. He’s an EMMY winning writer, stand-up comedian, and plays Troy on NBC’s critically acclaimed comedy, Community. Before all of that, you might know him from the Derrick comedy sketches, including Bro Rape and Spelling Bee (some of my favorites). He was also an indirect influence on the death of Peter Parker in the Marvel comic Ultimate Spiderman. Obviously, the writer/actor/comedian is clearly making a very impressive resume for himself. Artists You Should Know Before Your Friends Do 2011

Have you ever listened to a friend talk about what “great new music” they have been listening to? That topic is usually followed up by saying that “They knew them first.” As annoying as that is, we all do it in our most subtle ways (like saying that “I love Three-Oh-H” instead of saying “I love 3Oh!3). Below are just some of the best new music to come out in the past year, and with very promising futures. Hopefully, this will help you battle that annoying topic with some other musical examples of your own. Enjoy! [Read more...]

Premieres of Fall's New TV Comedies

Community – “Pilot” (Thurs. @ 9:30/8:30c – NBC)

Community follows a group of people who, for various reasons, find themselves at a community college. Though I have to wonder what different situations they can go through from episode to episode, I doubt this is going to be the main concern. Instead, like The Office, as random as the plots will probably be to liven up these semi-boring settings, this is going to be a character driven comedy more than anything else. As it is said in the opening speech: “What is community college? Well, you’ve heard all kinds of things. You’ve heard it’s loser college, or remedial teens, 20 something dropouts, middle age divorcees, and old people, keeping their minds active as they circle the drain of eternity…” These are just a few of the characters presented in this first episode, and though most fill a stereotypical role of the many students found in this learning setting, their representation is anything but boring in this show.   [Read more...]
