Film Review: The Avengers

The Avengers HeaderOver the past few years Marvel has been wracking up a slew of great films based on their universe’s superheroes.  Starting with Iron Man, Marvel moved though the Hulk (The Incredible Hulk, just so there’s no confusion), Captain America, and Thor, each with quite a bit of deserved success.  In addition to Hawkeye and Black Widow, these characters make up the avengers, and sticking to the additive math, the greatness of each of these previous films adds up to one incredible, possibly the best, superhero movie. The Breakdown: Marvel’s The Avengers Trailer

Avengers Trailer HeaderLast night the ALCS game ran long on FOX due to extra innings, so neither Nate or myself got more than 8 minutes of Terra Nova’s episode recorded.  Lucky us, if FOX is still doing their “make you suffer” game of posting shows 8 days after airing, we’re gonna have to wait a while to see the rest of the episode.

To make up for this horrible act of treachery on our part by not having a write up of the episode this morning I have a gift for you all, and it comes in the awesome form of the trailer for The Avengers.  AKA Marvel’s costumed finest coming together to fight crime as a team! Yay! [Read more...]

Now Playing Review – Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

Taglines on movie posters are iffy things.  They are there to grab your attention if the image on the poster can’t pull that off on its own, with words that are supposed to get you excited as it toots the horn of the film that might not deserve to even have a horn capable of being tooted.  Just look at the tagline for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which claims that the movie is “An epic of epic epicness.”  Pretty big tooting going on right?  Wait… Anyway… This is definitely one of those times that the tagline gives the right amount of hype that the film deserves.  It is indeed of the epic proportion.

Scott Pilgrim takes its story from a series of graphic novels created by Bryan Lee O’Malley (go read them now!), and it goes a little something like this:  Scott Pilgrim is dating a high schooler until one day a girl named Ramona Flowers comes along and becomes a strong infatuation for him.  Eventually they start dating, but in order to keep dating her he has to do much more than your average Joe.  You see, Ramona comes with the baggage of leaving a trail of victims in her wake, seven evil exes to be exact.  Now Scott Pilgrim must defeat all of them to get his happily ever after with her. Review: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a kinetic, and often times perfect, adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s fantastic comic series and is a movie that is unlike almost anything you have ever seen.

Scott Pilgrim is a nice guy, but he can be kind of a dick, and rather oblivious, but ultimately he is dating a high schooler.  Knives Chau, she’s Chinese.  The two pow around Toronto, nearly holding hands, and maybe even hugging once; it is easy, safe, and comfortable for Mr. Pilgrim.  That is until Ramona Flowers enters Scott’s dreams; literally.  And before he even knows it Scott meets Ramona in real life and he can’t help himself but be drawn to her while he quickly begins half-assing his relationship with Knives.  Scott enters a sticky love triangle with the two that is only further complicated by the appearance of the League of Ramona’s Evil Ex’s whom he must defeat in order to win her heart.

Comic-Con International 2010 – My Experience in Nerd Heaven

A couple of weeks ago I excitedly told my aunt that I was going to Comic Con in a week, with a big ol’ smile on my face.  I didn’t really expect her to be jealous, but I was overly excited.  Then she asked if it was a gathering of comics or something.  As in comedians.  I then proceeded to try and explain that it was this really cool event that happens each year that has been taken over by Hollywood in the past decade or so.  Basically it has everything a nerd would desire to see, including comics, writers, artists, video games, tv shows, and movies.  I told her about the panels I was planning on sitting in on and some of the people that were scheduled to attend.  I was adamant about making her see how awesome it was, but she just didn’t get it.  Color me deflated.  Oh well, I guess Comic Con is just for certain people…

Review: The Losers

The Losers is a fun, funny, throwback action film that never lets up and features great work by the solid ensemble cast that is obviously having a blast and brings us in on all the fun.

The Losers is a band of CIA operatives that get hung out to dry on a black op gone wrong.  They get the name of their turncoat, Max, and fake their deaths waiting for a chance to enact revenge for trying to kill them.  The group is waylaid by a rouge vigilante with a vendetta of her own on Max and she gives the Losers a bank roll and way back into the U.S.  From here the film takes a globe trotting approach as the Losers try and track down Max and foil his evil plan.

Rental Review – Push

I will admit that after my first viewing I was slightly confused by the story of Push because it was a little hard to follow for me. However, after rewatching it once more (okay, twice if you count once with the commentary track), I can finally say that I think I get it.

Push creates an interesting world involving people with powers, including a telekinetic “mover,” Nick (Chris Evans), and girl who can see the future, or a “watcher,” named Cassie (Dakota Fanning) as they search for Kira (Camilla Belle), a girl who is able to bend people to her will by giving them false memories. However, they are not the only ones searching for her. Division, a government based organization, is also looking for Kira because she is the first person with abilities to survive a unspecified drug injection, as well as break out of the facility with a syringe full of it.

Review: Push

This smallish budget indie sci-fi flick is entertaining and has some good ideas, but pacing and a couple lame ideas hold it back from being as clever as it thinks it is.
Division is a government organization that is responsible for maintaining and surveying the so called “special” people of the world while they are also known for experimenting on these people’s powers as well. One of these people with these powers is Nick Gant (Chris Evans) and he is a mover, able to make objects move or create shield like deflectors to protect themselves. Nick is in hiding in Hong Kong where he spends his time gambling and attempting to hustle the locals. Nick ends up getting tossed into a bit of a mess as a series of events begin to unfold starting with a couple of sniffers (can smell into the past of objects and are excellent trackers) from Division visiting him looking for an escaped test subject (Camilla Belle) that might be super powered after testing at Division. Almost immediately after the sniffers departure, Cassie (Dakota Fanning), who is a watcher (can see the future/predict a persons intentions) and she tells Nick that she has seen that they are going to find 6 million dollars; which would help with Nick’s gambling debt. Nick isn’t sold on the idea but before he can part with Cassie they are attacked by a group of individuals containing bleeders (screeching individuals that cause you to bleed out your brain and take out objects in their yells path) and the two end up on the run together. Review: Sunshine

Danny Boyle’s newest genre to play in is this great piece of sci-fi cinema that feels very fresh and original, most of the time, and keeps the viewer engaged throughout.
The crew of Icarus 2 is on a mission to reboot the sun which is dying and causing for a temperature decrease on Earth. The plan is to reboot it with a bomb equaling the mass of Manhattan and be the second and final attempt since the failed mission of Icarus 1 seven years prior. The crew of 8 is made up of a smattering of characters all with an individualized view of the proceedings from one another. Everyone gets a fair share of screen time with people only really ever gaining more due to the crew falling off one by one. This isn’t an actor showcase or focus on one lead, it is a true ensemble and everyone plays the part extremely well. The crew is very likable and sucks you into the story and we grow concerned for them as things begin to go south on the ship.
Cillian Murphy plays Capa the on board physicist who is responsible for delivering the payload (the bomb) and is the number one priority for survival of the crew. He does a great job as aforementioned at rationalizing the mission and lives and continues a string of great work by the actor ever since he broke out in 28 Days Later.
Chris Evans as Mace is also good here as the “for the mission” soldier who will do anything to see the mission through. Michelle Yeoh and Hiroyuki Sanada also do great work as the researcher and captain, respectively, on the ship and both make the most, especially Sanada, of their shares of screen time. Rose Byrne plays her biggest part in the third act and acts as the moral voice of the crew. Benedict Wong is also great as the flight analyst and his arc is a tough one to swallow at times. Cliff Curtis is great as the psychiatrist of the crew and helps us imagine the mystery and power of the sun and while also giving us the rational voice of the crew.
I know I have been avoiding the story, and that is with good reason, as the havoc that happens is best to unfold knowing as little as possible. In brief things go bad, events unfold, and the film devolves into a bit of horror at the end. The horror section doesn’t really make sense or really fit in the film, but it does work, we are just left with questioning why they went that route with the story; you’ll see what I mean when you see the film.
Production wise the movie looks fantastic, with all the special effects looking top notch and the ship itself is a marvel to look at. They also introduce some interesting ideas to help the crew cope with the journey and while a lot of the of things seem similar to previous sci-fi classics it never blatantly rips them off and usually puts a interesting spin on the proceedings. My only complaint is the weird use of filters toward the end during the horror proceedings, it’s just awkward and you can’t really tell what is going on half the time.
In the end, Sunshine is an excellent sci-fi film that could have been fantastic if it was just a hair more original and didn’t divert from it’s genre towards the end, even if it was done well. It is a must see for sci-fi fans and for anyone interested in an engaging, tense, and personal adventure that will take you on a realistic journey towards our sun.
