For Your Renting Pleasure

That’s right, my write-up for rentals has changed yet again.  This time around (and hopefully I will stick to it this time) I will write up little blurbs about the movies I have seen in the past week on Fridays, giving you suggestions for what to pick up and what to avoid when considering what to rent that weekend.  On this weeks list we’ve got: The Back-up Plan, The Last SongOperation: Endgame, Repo Men, The Runaways, A Single Man, and The United States of Tara.

Fight for the Last Copy:

United States of Tara: Season One

This Diablo Cody created, Showtime TV show is about a woman who has recently gone off the medications that have helped to suppress the other faces of her multiple personality disorder (or dissociative identity disorder).  Toni Collette plays Tara, and the way in which she moves in and out of these other personalities is pure artistry.  Though this is a serious topic, it does not shy away from the humor of it all, thanks in large part to the people she becomes.  In the beginning she is aware of three: Alice is a 1950s housewife, Buck is the redneck hick with a heart of gold, and T is basically the teenage slut, but eventually another emerges (but I will not spoil in for those who want to watch) in response to the overriding story arc of Tara digging into her past to discover what caused this disorder to take form during her teen years.

The show does not just stop with how this disorder effects Tara, but shows the strain it puts on her family.  John Corbett plays her supportive husband who i leading the search to discover her past and must constantly coral the other personalities (though he is far from ashamed of his wife). Now Playing Review – Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

Taglines on movie posters are iffy things.  They are there to grab your attention if the image on the poster can’t pull that off on its own, with words that are supposed to get you excited as it toots the horn of the film that might not deserve to even have a horn capable of being tooted.  Just look at the tagline for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which claims that the movie is “An epic of epic epicness.”  Pretty big tooting going on right?  Wait… Anyway… This is definitely one of those times that the tagline gives the right amount of hype that the film deserves.  It is indeed of the epic proportion.

Scott Pilgrim takes its story from a series of graphic novels created by Bryan Lee O’Malley (go read them now!), and it goes a little something like this:  Scott Pilgrim is dating a high schooler until one day a girl named Ramona Flowers comes along and becomes a strong infatuation for him.  Eventually they start dating, but in order to keep dating her he has to do much more than your average Joe.  You see, Ramona comes with the baggage of leaving a trail of victims in her wake, seven evil exes to be exact.  Now Scott Pilgrim must defeat all of them to get his happily ever after with her. Review: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a kinetic, and often times perfect, adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s fantastic comic series and is a movie that is unlike almost anything you have ever seen.

Scott Pilgrim is a nice guy, but he can be kind of a dick, and rather oblivious, but ultimately he is dating a high schooler.  Knives Chau, she’s Chinese.  The two pow around Toronto, nearly holding hands, and maybe even hugging once; it is easy, safe, and comfortable for Mr. Pilgrim.  That is until Ramona Flowers enters Scott’s dreams; literally.  And before he even knows it Scott meets Ramona in real life and he can’t help himself but be drawn to her while he quickly begins half-assing his relationship with Knives.  Scott enters a sticky love triangle with the two that is only further complicated by the appearance of the League of Ramona’s Evil Ex’s whom he must defeat in order to win her heart.

Review: Greenberg

Noah Baumbach’s latest, Greenberg, is just as engaging of a film as his previous efforts and is an interesting dual character study of a couple of people who can’t quite figure out their lives.

Roger is lost in life and he decides to try and sort it our by taking a break from life by moving into his brother’s house in LA for a bit while they are gone on vacation.  Florence is in a similar place in her life, though a bit younger in age to Roger, and the two meet as Florence checks up on Roger’s brothers house as she is the family’s personal assistant.  The two begin to strike up a bit of a friendship as they cross paths at the house and both hesitantly move towards possible romantic feelings.  Roger is a bit conflicted though, as he is with everything, as he contemplates hooking up with an ex from his past and tries to figure out if she was the one who got away.  Roger also reconnects with an old friend, Ivan who is also his former bandmate, who has changed quite a bit but the two try and find a common ground to rekindle their thing relationship.  From these lines we follow Roger and Florence as they try and figure out what happened to their lives, where they want to go, and watch them make mistakes along the way with and separate from each other.
