Review: No Strings Attached

No Strings Attached is a solid and against type rom-com for the first hour or so of the film before divulging into cliché and loses a lot of the good will they earned in the start.

Emma and Adam have been crossing paths for years now. From the first time he tried to finger her at camp to a fuck buddy relationship that this film revolves around. The twist on the formula is that Emma, not Adam, really doesn’t want anything other than sex out of the relationship. Closed off and a life long loner, Emma, never seems to let a relationship work and she really enjoys her physical only relationship with Adam. Adam’s feelings start to get the best of him though and their deal begins to crumble under the new expectations.

“I just don’t know!” That’s right, last time it was a confusedly baffled emoticon as a review with Black Swan, and now yet another Natalie Portman movie leaves me not knowing what to say. However, instead of the befuddled mindset I was left with then, now I am going with a more exasperated thought process due to my lack of ability to form a full sentence pertaining to an opinion, as in “I can’t decide how much I liked this movie,” and that confusion is definitely not something to aspire to.

The reason for this lies in the story. No Strings Attached ups the anti on the question as to whether or not men and women can be best friends and nothing more by throwing sex into the mix as a catalyst. Emma and Adam think they can do just that by agreeing to use each other for sexy time, and if at any time one of them starts developing feelings they will end the physical arrangement immediately. For Your Renting Pleasure

This week we’ve got one good and a whole bunch of bad (at least in my opinion), with Dorian Gray, The Joneses, The Killers, and Lie to Me: Season 1.

Lie to Me: Season One

Now he may be no House, but Cal Lightman is another great character on TV that is easy to love for the reasons the people in the show hate him. I mean, I wouldn’t want to be around someone who would know when I was lying every time and call me out on it. Annoying and abrasive, but it makes for some pretty entertaining television.

The show would get old fast if it was simply about a human lie detector, but the show works because it goes much deeper than “he’s lying! Lock him up!” Obviously not every lie is an admission of guilt, so instead they have to delve deeper into the different suspects’ histories, emotional connections to people, religions, events, and things of that nature to figure out why their face would betray a certain emotion when answering a certain question. Now Playing Review – Valentine's Day

I still stand behind the fact that I am not a fan of this day, but Valentine’s Day has at least warmed my heart enough to be capable of acknowledging it as an acceptable holiday. But just this once.
In a nutshell, Valentine’s Day takes a group of characters that tie together in simple ways and depicts the relationships in their lives, whether they be familial, budding romances, friendships, till death do you part relationships, or what have you. The stories are all familiar and never veer from what is expected of them (except for one storyline), but the humor and the majority of the casting are enough to keep it entertaining and enjoyable. With the predictable stories the film also occasionally dips into the cheesier elements of the romcom genre, but it was at least not as sappy as the trailers that were shown prior to the film. Review: Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is a bunch of good actors, looking pretty, and doing decent work in paint by numbers plot and unimaginative entry into the rom-com genre; whose formula has been done much better in a few films still fresh in the memory.
Now, this film is bound to bring in the bank for a number of reasons; lots of big name stars, appropriately timed release over the romantic holiday weekend, and its familiar plot lines a plenty being peddled in the film’s trailer. Now beyond this surface assessment people can make from the trailer and the poster, the film will gel with audiences once in the theaters because it offers up plenty of comfort food for the average viewer in a multitude of so obviously planned elements it is almost laughable. This is how I imagine some of the production meeting going on this film;
