Open Thread – Games: A Scarier Format Than Film?

condemnedLauren: With Halloween coming up just around the corner, now is the time to up your yearly dose of horror infused entertainment.  Personally I love the genre, but films are one thing, while video games are something else.  They are the killer sharpening his blade in my closet while he softly, albeit menacingly, whispers my name in a promise that the covers I hide under provide no protection from what is to come.  That may seem like quite the elaboration on the terror level provided by games, but anyone who has played these games can tell you that there is just something about them that will haunt you hours after you have set the controller down. Gaming Review – Alan Wake

As far as video games go, Alan Wake is the closest I have ever come to playing a game of the horror genre (because I don’t think my roommate handing over the controller for a minor section of Dead Space counts).  Technically it says “psychological action thriller” right on the box, but I will ignore this distinction and revel in my moment of accomplishment, because it is probably never going to happen again.  Let’s just say the harrowing setting and creepy story of Alan Wake gave me my fill of horror games for a good long while thanks to its abusive use of my childhood fear of the dark and things that violently go bump in it.

One of the worst things a writer has to deal with is writer’s block.  At least that is probably partly what Alan Wake thought when he was traveling to the large forested region of Bright Falls for a getaway with his wife and typewriter.  If only he was so lucky. [Read more...]

Suggestion Box (April 26 – May 2)

Sorry for the late posting (cuz I know all of you have been like: “What the heck Lauren!  It’s long past the 2nd.  Where my recommendations be at fool?”  That’s right, that’s how people talk in my mind), but the end of a period in one’s life can get a little time consuming.  So I am a little backlogged, but on the bright side your anticipation can grow for the upcoming rental reviews of An Education (really good) and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (heck no), and a gaming review of Halo: ODST (pretty good).  Ooo, so exciting!

Movies:

Buried Teaser Trailers – This simple trailer isn’t much to look at, but it is a nice way of introducing the premise of the film.  And Ryan Reynolds, ooo…  Check it out here.  But if you are more for visuals, check out the original teaser as well here.

Jonah Hex Trailer – A trailer has finally been released for this supernatural (to what extent, I’m not sure) western, and it’s looking pretty interesting.  And ooo!  Will Arnett!  But I really want to know what the little blurbs I have been reading mean by the bad guy releasing “Hell on Earth.”  We talking demon apocalypse or something?  Check it out here and decide for yourself.

Suggestion Box (April 5 – 11)

Movies:

Dinner for Schmucks Trailer – Paul Rudd plays a guy who is trying to work his way up the company ladder.  The one way to do this?  Bring a ridiculous guest with him to the boss’s monthly dinner.  And that man is Steve Carell.  Check it out here.

The Other Guys Trailer – When Will Ferrell has had his share of sports parody films the next obvious choice is the buddy cop genre.  Check it out here.

Gaming:

Alan Wake Building a Thriller Featurette – (360 exclusive) – Ever since this game was announced it has looked like it was going to be a phenomenal…and capable of scaring the poo out of me.  Well, after seeing this video I just don’t know if avoiding it is really an option.  I will just have to play through squinted eyes… Check it out here.
