A few weeks have passed since my last compilation post of movie rentals, and I should be ashamed at my lack of movie watching, but I have still spent a large percentage of my time wisely! With a fall season shooting out some big name video games and an important World Series for STL fans, the Cardinals, Batman, and Nathan Drake have been keeping me a little too busy to slip some movies in. Ok, there might have also been a Teen Wolf marathon on MTV at some point… However, with those games in the bag (for the most part) and the Cardinals coming out the victors, it is now time that I get back to watching some rentals. Week after week I apparently find ways to theme my rentals without realizing it beforehand. Scratch that, I totally did it on purpose, and you know it’s true cuz I said totally. A couple of weeks ago I went with creature features, and this week’s selection of The Nines and Being John Malkovich has me going for films in which reality is not really all it seems to be, creating odd words that raise questions, both for the betterment, and detrimental to, the film. This week I apparently decided to go with slightly older creature features (also reading Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot, which both stays in the same vain and explains why I have only gotten two movies in). Both films wear their age in similar ways; however, From Dusk Till Dawn rises above this in other ways by creating a fun B-Film, while The Thing fails to do the same. [Read more...]

A Serious Analysis

First things first, if you haven’t seen A Serious Man, I would recommend watching it before reading this. If you don’t follow my advice, don’t get mad at me when I tell you that Bruce Willis was a ghost…I’ve said too much…
After I finished watching A Serious Man last year, I was stunned. It was late, I was tired, and although I enjoyed the film I was too confused by the ending and the lack of a resolution to form an opinion. I drove home in a daze and went to sleep not thinking about the film. Then something happened to me which I had never experienced before. I woke up in the middle of the night, and I had pieced everything together. Suddenly the ending made sense and the film had purpose. I am a secular ‘Goy’ but I still don’t know how it took me so long to see that A Serious Man was a retelling of the story of Job.
Rental Review – Legion

I sure hope the man upstairs is too busy going about his Godly chores to sit down and watch this movie, because if he does, Legion might just be reason enough to bring on the next apocalypse.
As the story goes, when God loses faith in mankind he catastrophically shakes his global Etch-A-Sketch to clear the world of humanity before starting again. Last time he sent a flood to wash away man’s mistakes; this time he must be uber angry because he is going to make it hurt. Sending his angels to do the dirty work, they infect a vast number of humans, turning them into violently demonic beings. Luckily enough for humanity, we have Michael on our side, an angel who falls to earth in order to join the fight and protect man (well, a pregnant girl who is carrying a very important baby). Rental Review – The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a beautiful looking film with a really intriguing story, but unfortunately doesn’t answer all of the questions I wish it had. Looks like I am going to just have to use my imagination to fill in the blanks (See what I did there? “Imagination”? That’s right, I went there…)
A long time ago in a mountain range far, far away, a supernaturally inclined man named Parnassus was living a life devoted to his faith when a man name Mr. Nick came a’knockin’. This visit from this devil-esque man set into motion a long lasting relationship for the following hundreds of years based on both men’s inability to say no to competition, gambling, and deal making, eventually leading to a deal in which Parnassus’s entry into the bargain is his own daughter. When she turns 16 she is to be given over to Mr. Nick, and as this movie just so happens to have it, her 16th birthday is right around the corner. But before Parnassus is forced to make good on his side of the arrangement, Mr. Nick makes one final deal that she will go to whoever is able to collect the most souls before time runs out. Rental Review – The Time Traveler’s Wife

The Time Traveler’s Wife may be about a man who uncontrollably jumps around within a certain span of time, but at its basic level it is a love story. A love story that unfortunately takes a rocky start with its depiction on screen in concern to dialog and pacing, but eventually it finds itself and the tragically beautiful love story is able to unfold.
When Clare Abshire was 6 a man spoke to her from the trees asking if he could borrow her blanket seeing as he seemed to have forgotten his clothes. Before disappearing again he promised to come back to see her. Ah the creepy start to a beautiful relationship. Years later after she has grown into a woman she comes across Henry DeTamble, the same man from the tree-lined meadow, but this time around he knows nothing of her. The problem is that at this stage in his life he has never come to visit her in that meadow because he is a time traveler, and thus Clare has already fallen in love with a man who she has known all her life but who has never met her before.
