HST Winter: Great Songs For The Holidays

When I was younger, my family and I would sit around our Christmas tree, open up presents, and listen to some of the most classic Christmas songs of yesteryear. Some Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Brenda Lee, and a little bit of Nat “King” Cole made my Christmas mornings incredibly memorable. However, as I grow older and my musical tastes change, I pushed some of those classics to the side and started finding some more recent holiday songs to start filling my December with new memories. Suggestion Box (Oct. 11 – 17)

This week’s Suggestion Box just has a few gaming videos, including Fable III’s awesome launch trailer and two videos for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II.  Maybe next week will have some exciting movie trailers again, but until then, enjoy these.

Gaming:

Fable III Launch Trailer - (360/PC) – Check out the launch trailer for Fable III which is all about the Revolution aspect of the story line (and builds off of a lot of historical imagery, like the Boston Massacre blended with dodgeball), which from what I have heard constitutes a large portion of the early part of the game.  It will be really interesting to see where it goes from there.

Suggestion Box (Oct. 4 – 10)

This week’s Suggestion Box is short and sweet with only two trailers.  With that said they are for two films that I am really looking forward to: 127 Hours and The Tempest.

Movies:

127 Hours Full Length Trailer – Maybe there is a draft in my kitchen or it was the use of one of my favorite songs, but this trailer just gave me the chills.  (For those of you who don’t know it is about Aron Ralston, the man who had to remove an arm when it got pinned by a rock while mountain climbing.  He is being played by James Franco so hopes are high).

Gaming Review – Halo: Reach

The scene opens on a shot with part of the void of space being filled by a planet.  The composition of the frame brings a flash of a memory to mind, but joy quickly dissipates at the realization that the Battlestar Galactica and the ships it has kept safe is not coming in from the right of the screen.  That is not Earth, which holds all the hope of mankind in that universe.  It is Reach, a doomed planet without hope, only a story.

As most players familiar with the Halo mythology know the events on Reach takes place before the first Halo game.  As the forgotten helmet in the beginning suggests things are not looking too good for Reach as the Covenant attacks, yet as the game progresses the player must fight for a planet whose outcome is already written into the history books, adding an overriding tragic feel to the efforts of the team in which the gameplay follows. Suggestion Box (Sept. 27 – Oct. 3)

This week’s Suggestion Box has the trailer for Heartless, True Grit, Wild Target, and a second trailer for Paranormal Activity 2 and for Skyline.  Also, we’ve got a trailer for the upcoming DLC for Read Dead Redemption (Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare).  Clearly we are getting closer to Halloween with this selection.

Movies:

Heartless Trailer - Well this is pretty far from singing Beatles songs… Jim Sturgess makes a deal with the devil, or someone else with equally ominous deals to be made for a “better” life, in this film about the underworld creeping into ours.  Nothing necessarily new, but I do love Sturgess as an actor and am intrigued to see how he does in this one.

Suggestion Box (Sept. 20 – 26)

Last week’s Suggestion Box is coming a little late, so my bad.  But there is some decent stuff none-the-less, so don’t be upset!  K thanks.  For films we’ve got a new preview for the upcoming Harry Potter film, a few more new TV show recommendations (including Undercovers, Lone Star, The Event, and Hawaii Five-0), a new trailer for the upcoming Bond game, and a new music video from OK Go.  Enjoy.

Movies:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 Trailer – Yay!  Another trailer.  That’s right, that is all the hype I can manage.  Besides, this movie needs no help from me.

Suggestion Box (Sept. 13 – 19)

This week for movie trailers we’ve got The Dilemma, a second trailer for Due Date, The Fighter, and Unstoppable, whereas for gaming we’ve got videos for Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, The Last Guardian, and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.

Movies:

The Dilemma Trailer – A film about one of the trickiest questions ever: whether or not to tell a best friend if their significant other is cheating on them.  Something tells me that it is going to be a much more entertaining experience when Vince Vaughn and Kevin James are involved.

Suggestion Box (Sept. 6 – 12)

This week’s Suggestion Box contains trailers for the movies Hereafter and Priest, my brief writeup for some of the premiered shows this fall, and then videos for Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and Portal 2 in games.

Movies:

Hereafter Trailer - The newest film paring Clint Eastwood as director and Matt Damon has Damon cast as a genuine psychic who has trouble living with his ability connected to the afterlife, interweaving stories of those who come into contact with him, bringing questions of their own about what lies ahead due to personal experiences.  Not to put too much into the trailer, but the brief clips alone of the acting shows a glimmer of the performances ahead, which will hopefully live up to what comes in the film.

Suggestion Box (Aug. 30 – Sept. 5)

Looks like it is another week full of awesome gaming videos and far too few movie trailers.  We’ve got a trailer for The Freebie, and videos for the games Brink, Hydrophobia, the new Mass Effect 2 DLC, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, Portal 2, and Vanquish.

Movies:

The Freebie Trailer – A film in which a couple (played by Dax Shepard and Katie Aselton) toys with the idea that it would be okay if each was given a free pass to pursue a one night stand with someone else.

Suggestion Box (Aug 23 – 29)

In this week’s Suggestion Box we’ve got the movie trailer for 127 hours, a trailer for the new AMC TV show The Walking Dead, and a whole heap of video game videos from Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Brink, Halo: Reach, James Bond 007: Blood Stone, and Portal 2.

Movies:

127 Hours Trailer – Remember back in 2003 when news broke that a man was forced to cut off his own arm after becoming stuck between a rock and a hard place?  Well, now it’s time for Aron Ralston’s story to become even more famous with a movie.  Let’s just hope that James Franco doesn’t have to get too disgustingly graphic with that act.  Ugh… Just thinking about it is making my goldfish swim back up my throat… Stupid delicious cheddar cheese crackers…

Suggestion Box (Aug. 16 – 22)

This weeks we’ve got videos for films (Case 39 and The Next Three Days), video games (Brink, Epic Mickey, Dragon Age 2, and Halo: Reach), and a hilarious video from Funny or Die promoting Piranha 3D for the Oscars.  Check them out below:

Movies:

Case 39 Trailer - A horror film in which a little girl is taken in by a social worker (renee Zewhen she discovers that her parents are trying to kill her.  In actuality the danger goes much deeper than deranged parents when supernatural events start occurring to those around the little girl.  Hopefully it is just something clinging to her and not a hidden evil residing within the girl because even if her hair has the strong potential to be styled like the girl from The Ring, I have had enough of that.

Suggestion Box (Aug. 9 – 15)

Hey guys, so I thought you would probably appreciate me being less lazy by posting the actual videos here through a strenuous copy/paste process (sarcasm applied) instead of just posting links to those sites.  Hope this works better for you.

Movies:

How Do You Know Trailer – A love triangle between Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson.  Decisions, decisions…

Suggestion Box (July 19 – Aug. 8)

With Comic-Con and a brief excursion to my old college town I have been taking my good ol’ time collecting stuff to pass on from the past few weeks.  With that said the list isn’t actually too intense, so have no fear and get right to it!

Movies:

It’s Kind of a Funny Story Trailer – A comedy putting Zach Galifianakis in the psychiatric ward of a hospital, where he becomes a buddy with a younger boy who has voluntarily admitted himself.  Check it out here.

Monsters Teaser Trailer – A creature feature about two people trying to find safety by going through the infected zone in Mexico, an area that has been quarantined off because of new life forms that have been appearing ever since a space probe crashed 6 years ago in that area.  Check out the creepy trailer here.

Suggestion Box (July 12 – 18)

Movies:

Centurion Trailer – A film that reminds me of the last King Arthur film with the look of the opening battle in Gladiator, and a story that is probably not really like either.  But ooo, Roman soldiers.  Check it out here.

Devil Trailer – Even after the butchering of The Last Airbender I still have some faith in the fact that M. Night Shyamalan is capable of creating great films.  With Devil he both came up with the story and produced, and I am intrigued as to how they handle a film that looks like the majority of it is taking place in an elevator.  Hopefully it will be able to do what the Descent did and play up the more common fears people have, such as claustrophobia, the dark, etc, and not just play on the story element that the Devil is among them.  Check out the trailer here.

Suggestion Box (July 5 – 11)

Movies:

The Loved Ones – As the school year comes to an end something at the top of most girls’ lists is a date to the prom.  Apparently some girls are willing to go much further than others to get what they want.  Disturbingly far…  Check it out here.

Resident Evil: Afterlife Trailer #2 – There are so many things working against this film: 1 – It’s the fourth (live action) film in a series that has had its ups and downs.  2 – It looks like it is “stealing” heavily from The Matrix (which I personally am more than happy to see since The Matrix was an amazing movie, so shut your faces haters).  3 – It’s in 3D.  But you know what, I would not count this one out yet.  Sure, having this many sequels sometimes leads the feeling that a franchise just doesn’t know when to die (stupid phrasing for a zombie franchise), but I know that I really want to see what happens after the cliffhangers of the third film.  And 3D matrixy moves blended with zombies sounds like a good time in my opinion, and with what looks comparable in this trailer to the portions of what I saw my roomie playing in Resident Evil 5, this could be a film that competes with the first film to be the best in the series.  But I won’t count my chickens just yet.  Check it out here.
